What is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a small, screw-like post typically made of titanium that serves as a sturdy foundation for replacing missing teeth.

Dental implants can be used to replace a single missing tooth, multiple teeth, or even support full dentures.

The implant itself is surgically placed into the jaw bone, where it acts as an artificial tooth root. Over time, the implant fuses with the bone, creating a strong and permanent base for a custom-made dental prosthesis, such as a crown, bridge, or denture.

Replacing missing teeth is not just about looks; your oral health can be affected too. Gaps can cause surrounding teeth to shift out of place, making them more difficult to keep clean. This can potentially lead to issues like gum disease or changes in your bite.

Implants offer a long-lasting, natural-looking solution that can help restore both the function and appearance of your smile.

Why Replace Missing Teeth?

When a tooth is missing, the surrounding teeth can start to shift into the empty space, leading to alignment problems. Over time, the jaw bone in that area may begin to weaken and shrink, reducing support for nearby teeth, which can increase the risk of further tooth loss.

The Dental Implant Process

The dental implant process involves two main components: the implant (a small titanium post) and the artificial tooth that replaces the missing one.

Your dentist will use IV sedation or general anesthesia to ensure you’re fully comfortable throughout the procedure. Your dental team will monitor you closely and take every step to make the experience as smooth and stress-free as possible.

Then, they will surgically place the implant into your jaw bone beneath the gumline. As your mouth heals over the next three to six months, the implant gradually fuses with the bone, creating a strong and stable foundation.

Once healing is complete, you'll return to our office where your dentist will attach a custom-made tooth replacement, such as a dental crown, bridge, or denture, to your implant. Your restoration will be designed to match the appearance and function of your natural teeth, and once it's attached, your smile is complete.
